Amazon Deforestation Alerts Hit Historic Low

Brazil has shared good news about the Amazon rainforest. The National Institute for Space Research, or INPE, checks the forest from space. Its DETER system looks for changes in the trees and sends alerts about possible forest loss. From August 2025 to July 2026, these alerts covered 2,874 square kilometres in the Amazon. This was a 36% drop from the year before. It was also the lowest result in the history of this data series. The area was 55.6% below the average for the previous ten years. These numbers show that less forest was under alert during this period. Scientists compare this full twelve-month period with earlier periods to understand the direction of change. A lower alert area is good news because forests store carbon, support many animals and plants, and are home to many communities.

DETER uses images from satellites to find changes quickly. The information helps environmental teams choose places to inspect. However, an alert is not the same as Brazil's official yearly deforestation number. Another system, called PRODES, produces that official number. In a separate update, INPE said that confirmed Amazon deforestation in 2025 was 12.07% lower than in 2024. Eight of the nine states in the Legal Amazon had a reduction. The results are positive, but the work is not finished. Thousands of square kilometres of forest were still lost or placed under alert. Brazil needs good technology, strong rules, and people on the ground to protect the rainforest. The new data gives hope and shows that careful monitoring can support real action.
