Great Barrier Reef Shows Signs of Recovery

The Great Barrier Reef is a very large coral system in Australia. Every year, scientists study the reef to understand its condition. In August 2026, the Australian Institute of Marine Science published a new report. The team studied 121 reefs between August 2025 and June 2026. During each reef survey, scientists looked at the amount of living hard coral. This amount is called coral cover. The new results show some good changes after serious coral bleaching in 2024. In the northern region, coral cover went from 30 percent in 2025 to 35.1 percent in 2026. In the central region, it went from 28.6 percent to 31.6 percent. The southern region was almost stable, but it fell a little, from 26.9 percent to 26.4 percent.

The weather helped some corals during the Australian summer. The sea was warmer than usual, and warm water can make coral lose the small algae that give it food and color. This is coral bleaching. However, a late summer monsoon brought clouds and rain. It helped cool the water and probably reduced the bleaching. Scientists say the report shows early recovery, not a complete solution. Of the reefs in the study, 28 percent had more coral cover, 56 percent had no net change, and 16 percent had less. The reef still faces climate change, cyclones, floods, and coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish. Australia has also had six mass bleaching events between 2016 and 2025. The results are hopeful because many reefs can recover when conditions improve. Still, people must protect the reef, reduce global emissions, and continue careful scientific monitoring.
