🎧 Listening Audio (Level 1)

Brazilian police rescued 412 wild animals in Tocantins on August 19, 2026. The operation happened near Palmeiras do Tocantins, on the BR-226 highway. The Federal Highway Police, or PRF, received information about a suspicious car. Officers ordered the driver to stop, but the driver continued at high speed. Later, local people helped the police find the car on another road. The people inside had left it there. The locked vehicle had hundreds of animals inside.

The police found 396 birds and 16 monkeys. The birds included 390 curiós, five thrushes, and one tanager. The monkeys included squirrel monkeys, one pied tamarin, and capuchin monkeys. Many were inside crowded cages and transport boxes. Some cages held dozens of animals together. The PRF reported that the animals did not have enough water or food. The conditions showed signs of mistreatment.

Officers removed the animals from the car and took them to a PRF unit. Naturatins, the state environmental agency, then accepted responsibility for their care and next steps. The official report confirms the rescue, the number of animals, and the conditions that officers found. It does not say what happened after Naturatins received them. There is no public information yet about treatment, release into nature, or how many animals survived. This difference is important: the animals were removed from a dangerous situation, but their final outcome is still unknown. The case was recorded as a possible wildlife crime and other possible offences. Authorities may release more information as they continue their work.
