Scientists found early signs of recovery after surveying 121 reefs on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
It is the percentage of a reef surface covered by living hard coral, a key indicator used by scientists.
Coral cover rose to 35.1% in the north and 31.6% in the central region, while the south stayed nearly stable.
Recovery means becoming healthy again. Initial recovery describes the first signs of that process, not a finished result.
